“Here you go. You’ve been running around here all day, taking care of everybody’s needs but your own. Get something in your system and let these folks handle themselves for a minute,” Caine’s deep, panty-melting voice says as he hands me a plate of food while placing a bottle of water in front of me.

“Thank you, Mr. Bellamy,” I say before taking a bite of the pasta salad on the plate he brought me. I am thankful to have the divider plate since I hate for my food to touch.

“Unless you want to know how much I enjoy hearing your voice say my name that way, I suggest you remove the sultry connotation from your tone.” His declaration causes the bite of food I took to go down the wrong way as I fight to regain my composure and not choke.

“You okay, boss lady?” Kisha runs over, looking from me to Caine, whose rapt focus has yet to leave me, making my body temperature rise.

“She’s good. I got her,” Caine informs her without looking in her direction as I shift my body in the chair, trying to avoid his piercing stare.

“Looks like you’re in capable hands then.” Kisha grins. Her hands raise in a sign of surrender as she backs away from the table.

My insides feel like they’re vibrating as a lightness fills my chest when my eyes return to the table where Caine’s gaze is already on me, as if he never paid Kisha any attention.

“Please eat so I know you’ve properly replenished yourself from the energy you’ve given to everyone else.” His statement is a cross between pleading and demanding as I pick up my fork and continue eating my food.

For some reason, everything tastes far better than I expected as I do a little dance in my seat and take bite after bite from the plate.

“A woman unafraid to enjoy her food no matter whose presence she’s in… I like it.”

“Food could possibly be a love language for me due to how much I enjoy a good meal.”

“I’ll make a note of that. Another thing I have been taking note of and find myself admiring about you after watching you today is your strength. You have given the bride and groom and everyone in attendance the best part of you without wavering in your dedication to ensure their happiness. My question is, who’s doing the same for you? And please forgive me if I’m out of line.”

The food nearly gets lodged in my throat from his statement and question because, for one, I love what I do and do it without expecting any accolades. How do I tell him the truth and that no one is doing so for me because I’m single by no choice of my own? I would be a happily married woman by now if I had it my way. My words won’t dislodge from my throat to say anything, and yet I’m unable to continue eating as the fork hovers in front of my mouth.
